Give an example of a skill that students in K-12 need to be fluent (quick and accurate) in doing.
(Select a skill other than math facts!)
- What are the subskills needed to be fluent in the skill you identified?
- Why is this a skill that needs to be fluent.
- What problems could it cause if the student is not fluent in the skill.

A skill that students in K-12 need to be fluent in is sight words. Sight words are important in order to be able to create sentences and go onto read and write. The subskills needed for learning sight words and becoming fluent is the alphabet and pronunciation. As I mentioned above, this is an important skill to be fluent in in order to be able to construct sentences and read and write. If this is a skill that a student is not fluent in then it could lead to problems with reading and writing later on in school!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I agree 100%. Sight words are essential for the foundation of both reading and writing in a K-12 setting. Without fluency, students could have a lot of trouble down the road.
DeleteI agree with you completely when you say that sight words are really important and need to be know. If children don't get those from the beginning then they will have trouble forever down the road.
DeleteThe proper use of punctuation is a skill that K-12 students would certainly need to be fluent in. The subskills for the use of punctuation would be the ability to write words, construct sentences, etc. Whether this punctuation is simply a period at the end of a statement or a question mark indicating an inquiry, punctuation can make all the difference. If a student does not know when to use a period, question mark, or other punctuations, their writing could struggle severely and also confuse the teachers/students who may read it. Fluency in the use of punctuation would strengthen students' writing and allow them to express their thoughts more clearly.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right! Proper use is important when writing but also needed to become fluent reader as well. Punctation is very important.
DeleteThis is a great point. If students do not understand punctuation, then their comprehension of texts will be impaired. A sentence can be interpreted in drastically different ways if the punctuation is changed, so students might interpret the text incorrectly even if they know all the words in the sentence. Similarly, if a student misinterprets punctuation marks or simply reads the sentence and ignores the punctuation, then the student's comprehension of the material will be confused or unclear.
DeleteI agree completely. If students aren't fluent in the proper use of punctuation, they may have a hard time expressing what they are meaning to say. Also the reader may misinterpret what the student is saying which can cause confusion. Punctuation overall is super important in having structure within a text.
DeleteThat's a very good point Dylan. Children definitely need to be fluent in punctuation, if they weren't then they would either have run on sentences or their sentences wouldn't make sense. For example if a student is asking a question and doesn't know the correct punctuation, then people wouldn't know if it was a question or a sentence.
DeleteA skill a student K-12 should be fluent is reading text with accuracy. Accuracy when reading is a students ability to correctly read words and sentences. Sub skills of accuracy are one on one correspondence of letter sounds to words and direction of text which is when the student can read correctly from left to right. These are both sub skills of emerging readers but are key to fluency when reading and comprehending all levels and varieties of text. If a student is not fluent in these skills that student will not be able to comprehend or learn from text read independently or to even be able to read words and text at all on their own.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! Just as I talked about sight words as a key component for reading fluency, reading text with accuracy is crucial. The issues that could arise for a student that does not have the ability to read text with accuracy is alarming. Great point Ashley.
DeleteI agree!! Reading is an important skill that is used daily. It can increase independence for a student if they are able to read and identify words. Reading is a part of every subject and it can cause a decrease in frustration if a student is able to read fluently. Also, if a student is non verbal, being able to read and identify words would be a way for a student to communicate.
DeleteStudents need to be fluent in the process of blending sounds. The subskill of this skill is to familiarize the students to the concepts that written symbols relate to sounds that can be put together to form words with meanings. This skill is crucial for the student to be able to read because if the student cannot recognize that blending letter sounds next to each other can create words, then the student will not be able to understand that written text denotes the sounds that we use to speak and written text is a collection of symbols that stand for real-life things. This skill is a necessary part of reading because students cannot solely rely on creating sight words to memorize every word that they will ever encounter.
ReplyDeleteI think students need to be fluent in there alphabet, its something that they need to know for the rest of there life. They need to be fluent in picking out which letter is which and being able to tell a "B" from a "D." This knowledge will be useful for them forever because as you get older and need to learn words and form sentences, you will always need letters to make those. Knowing them from a young age and always being able to tell the difference between each letter along with the sound they make will make their lives easier. Teachers start working on those at a young age and try to instill the letter and sounds in to children because they know how imporant those are for their future.
ReplyDeleteA student should be fluent in sign identification for safety. It is extremely important that a student is able to correctly identify safety signs, including hot, poison, exit, danger, caution, walk and do not walk on the street signs, out of order, stop signs. If a student is unable to identify these quickly and accurately, a student can be put at risk for danger. A student would have to be fluent in communication so they can communicate that they knows what a sign means. Also, they would have to be able to see and identify that it is a sign before even knowing what the sign meant. For some signs, reading may be required. For others, knowing colors would be important. If a student is not fluent in knowing and being able to identify various signs, the student may be at risk for danger. It is extremely important for independence and everyday life that a student is fluent in knowing signs that they see in their everyday life that can have a negative effect.
ReplyDeleteAlison, I like that you chose a skill that they need outside of the classroom in the real word! Since I am fluent in sign identification, I do not even think of it as a skill. But this is a skill I would not be able to function without on a daily basis, especially on a college campus!
DeleteAllison, I never would have thought of sign identification as a skill! But I think you are completely right, and thinking about it, i realize just how much we use sign identification in every day life. I really like your post!
DeleteA student in K-12 needs to be fluent in reading, especially by higher grades. Reading is an activity that we use on a daily basis whether we realize it or not. We fluently read our emails, text messages, text books, and even these blog posts. We see the words and we quickly recognize them and understand what they are saying. Students need to be able to quickly read and do so accurately for the real world because they will not always have time to slow down and sound things out. If they are looking for a street name, they will need to be able to see the sign, read it correctly, and prepare to turn on that street. A subskill that would be needed is letter recognition, meaning that they know the sounds letters make and the sounds letters make when put together. If a student does not become fluent in reading, then they will not be able to function as quickly in the real world and everything will be delayed. Text messages will not be as instantaneous, emails will be delayed, and they will miss turns because they did not recognize street name quick enough. Studentd may be able to function, but not as quickly as a fluent reader.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. Reading is the foundation of learning and is extremely necessary for processes new information. A student cannot reach there maximum potential if they do not have well developed reading skills.
DeleteA skill that students K-12 need to be fluent in, especially at this day and age, is technological literacy skills. Considering how frequently technology is being incorporated into the classroom, a student’s ability to easily operate different devices and navigate the Internet is becoming increasingly necessary. Some if the subs kills required to be fluent in technological literacy are fine motor skills that allow you to operate a variety of devices (laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone), as well as reading/writing literacy to be able to navigate and write assignments. This is a skill that needs to be fluent because educators are including more and more technology into their classroom because of the variety of resources it provides, and being able to use these resources allows the student to benefit most from them. If a student were not fluent in technological literacy, they would be unable to use important resources like the Internet, complete online assignments (like this one), and to be as involved in classroom activities as other students.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely, with today's increasing dependence on technology it is essential to be able to manipulate the different programs and such that you will encounter. Students will end up falling behind if they don't possess technological literacy skills.
DeleteYes that is a very good point. If students don't have the knowledge to use technology they will not succeed in school or life after school. The world is growing with technology and it keeps getting more advance, it's smart to start teaching kids how to use basic technology devices at a young age.
DeleteStudents should be fluent with phonics. It is crucial for mastering reading and writing skills. Phonics simply makes it easier for students to recognize and associate words and sounds to meaning. A sub skill needed for phonics would be alphabet skills, as phonics has a direct relationship with letters and the sounds that they make. This skill needs to be fluent in order to become fluent in reading and writing, which is extremely important. If a student is not fluent with this skills they will have a very difficult time reading and reading comprehension
ReplyDeleteStudents should be fluent in non-verbal communication, more specifically recognizing emotions via facial expressions. Subskills necessary to be fluent in facial recognition include: empathy, ability to express your own emotions, and an understanding of how emotions can be expressed physically. It is important for students to be fluent in this area because social situations require these skills. If fluent in this type of non-verbal communication kids will be able to socialize normally and fit in with others who are similar to them. Students won't be able to keep up in conversations or be able to respond appropriately without the skills of facial recognition. If the student cannot recognize emotions that are represented physically, then they will turn into the child that doesn't fit in with the other kids and ends up as the odd man out.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%, I think that this is extremely important for children to become fluent in to assure that they have the proper skills to participate appropriately in social settings. We all know someone that is not the best about picking up on social cues. Helping children pick up on non-verbal communication skills like you said will benefit them in fitting in and forming good relationships with others.
DeleteA skill in which a student K-12 should be fluent is proper sentence structure. There are many sub skills that influence a student's ability to master proper sentence structure. They include, but are not limited to: vocabulary, spelling, punctuations and capitalization. Students should be fluent in developing proper sentence structure because it improves social skills (most people speak the way they write), job opportunities in the future and it will also help their fluency in reading, which affects many other academic areas. If a student does not show fluency in this skill, it would make the student appear to be incompetent academically and ill-prepared to possible employers.
ReplyDeleteKathryn, I totally agree that fluency in sentence structure is extremely important for students. This will benefit students in the long run from anything like filling out applications and writing essays for school to, like you mentioned, very important skills like being able to read well. Fluency in sentence structure leads to being able to speak, write, and read well; which is clearly very important for students across the board.
DeleteStudents K-12 should be fluent in reading comprehension. A sub skills that influences reading comprehension would be associating pictures with words so that students could better understand what they are reading. Students should be fluent in recognizing words with their true meaning in order to grasp an understanding. Without fluent comprehension while reading, the child has no purpose or means of reading. Just because a student knows how to read doesn't mean they understand what they are reading which defeats the purpose.
ReplyDeleteGiven the day and age we are in, students K-12 need to be fluent in computer skills. Subskills of this include being able to type with speed and accuracy, internet proficiency, and knowledge in software such as microsoft word and and PowerPoint, just to name a few. It's important for students to be fluent in these skills because regardless of what kind of career they pursue in college, they will be working hands on with technology frequently for the rest of their lives. Students that are not fluent in computer skills will have a disadvantage in work setting against their computer proficient peers. Students that are not fluent in their computer proficiency will run into problems when attending university, applying for a job, or really trying to do just about anything these days with how technology driven our society has become.
ReplyDeleteA skill in which students k-12 need to be fluent in like many people have already mentioned is being properly trained in the uses of technology/ computer skills. Subskills include being able to use keyboards accurately, type words using the keyboard with accuracy, and using reflexes to click and selecting things they need that might appear on screen. It is important for students to be fluent on using computers and technology in general because in a world that is always evolving with new things students are going have to adjust to computers. Plus this skill is something that will be used in writing papers in school or even playing games in regards to content or standardized testing. Plus this skill is used past k-12 and everyday life. If students are not fluent in this skill typing papers will become a struggle and become a longer process past high school. Plus from college experience most access to class material is through online programs. So the use of technology is very important to understand because it will be something you deal with in job and college studies and if you lack these skills it will be harder to get jobs and further education.

ReplyDeleteStudents need to be fluent in computer skills when they are in the K-12 grade levels. students should be learning to use basic keyboard functions early in Elementary school. This will prepare them for the rest of their lives and school years. Subskills in this area include using shortcuts to copy and paste, print, opening documents and exiting applications and programs. They also need to be able to type complete sentences and spell words correctly, spell check will help them with this as well and may even improve their skills. This is a skill that is extremely important to have in life, not just in school. It would be a problem if someone didn't have this skill, it would prevent them from finding a job and even typing up a resume.
